BASEMENT
Basements are immersed in different levels of ground water along with aggressive infulences like damp soil contact, percolating water, hydrostatic water, hydrostatic pressure, chemicals etc. These require different and often specific waterproofing solutions.
CRITICAL PARAMETERS IMPACTING SELECTION OF SUITABLE SYSTEM FOR WATERPROOFING OF BASEMENTS IS:
Confined/unconfined retaining wall: This parameer considers availablity of space around the retaining wall.
Water table: Areas with higher water table require more robust waterproofing systems and hence it becomes one of the most critical parameter.
Soil contamination : Presence of chemical impurities, porous nature of the soil, issues of subsidence of soil are incorporated under this parameter
PRE-AAPLIED HDPE MEMBRANE FOR RAFT & RETAINING WALL
APPLICATION METHODOLOGY
Substrate Preparation
It is essential to create a sound and solid substrate to eliminate movement during the concrete pour. Substrates must be regular and smooth with no gaps or voids greater than 12mm. Grout around all penetrations such as utility conduits etc. for stability.
Membrane Installation
SmartCare Pre-Apply HDPE 40 can be applied at temperatures of 50 C or above. During cold or damp conditions, the selvedge and tape adhesive can be gently warmed using a hot air gun or similar to remove moisture or condensation and improve initial adhesion.
Horizontal Substrates
Place the membrane HDPE film side to the substrate with release liner side up facing towards the concrete pour. Leave plastic release liner in position until overlap procedure is completed. Accurately position succeeding sheets to overlap the previous sheet 75mm along the marked selvedge. Peel back the plastic release liner from between the overlaps and roll firmly with a heavy roller to ensure a continuous bond is achieved without creases and completely remove the plastic liner to expose the protective coating. Any initial tack will quickly disappear.
Vertical Substrate
Mechanically fasten the membrane vertically using fixings (i.e. fasteners) appropriate to the substrate with the printed coated side facing towards the concrete pour. The membrane may be installed in any convenient length. Secure the top of the membrane using a batten such as a termination bar or fixing 50mm below the top edge. Any additional fixing must be covered with a patch of SmartCare HDPE Bonding Tape. Ensure the underside of the succeding sheet is clean, dry and free form contamination before attempting to overlap. Roll firmly to ensure to watertight seal.
SYSTEM FEATURES & BENEIFTS :
- Continuos adhesive bond to poured concrete
- Unaffected by ground settlement
- Provides a barrier to water, moisture and gas
- Ready for placement of reinforcement bars

PVC MEMBRANE RAFT AND RETAINING WALL
APPLICATION METHODOLOGY
Substrate Preparation
Substrate must be fully dry. In case any moisture is present, dry the substrate using blow torch. Substrate voids/hollow concrete must be reparied and cured using polymer modified cement.
Application
Hot air or hot wedge welding achieves correct assembly of the geomembrane. The weldability and the quality of the welding done on site can be influenced by atmospheric conditions (temprature, humidity of the air) and also by the state of surface of the geomembrane (clean and dry) and must be adapted in consequence. An anti-puncturing geotextile or a composite (protective membrane with laminated fleece) should be placed onto the support of the waterproofing. In case the geomembrane will be covered with sand, gravel or concrete a geotextile or a protection membrane.
SYSTEM FEATURES & BENEIFTS :
- Excellent waterproofing capabilites.
- It has high level of water tightness even with It has high level of water tightness even with permanent deformation
- Resistant to swelling, rotting, ageing, Resistant to swelling, rotting, ageing, Puncture and roots
- It has a high capcity for adaptation to irregularities It has a high capcity for adaptation to irregularities or deformation of support due to its high deformability and weld strength
PRODUCT RANGE :
- SmartCare PVC B01 membrane (2m x 20m)
- SmartCare PVC B02 membrane (2m x 20m)
OTHER APPLICABLE SYSTEM:
- Pre-apply HDPE membrane for Raft and Post-applied SA SBS membrane with HDPE lining for retaining wall
- EPDM membrane for both raft and retaining wall
EPDM MEMBRANE FOR RAFT AND RETAINING WALL
APPLICATION METHODOLOGY
Surface Preparation
Concrete surface should be levelled, tough and should not have hollow areas or pot holes. Repair such areas using polymer modified cement sand mortar prepared with SmartCare Suprema Multi-Purpsoe Polymer. Allow to curing and clean surface so that it is a free from loose dust, particles, oil with broom of vacuum cleaner.
Horizontal Substrate (Looseley Laid)
Membrane should be loosely laid over a layer of protection mat (Geotextile min 250gm/m2). EPDM sheet to be spliced to adjacent sheet with 150mm laps. Prior to any attachment, cutting or splicing, each panel shall be allowed to relax a minimum of 30 miniutes.
Provide an extra 300mm membrane of edges and wall terminations to facilitate final positioning. The area of lap i.e. 150mm shall be cleaned and then lapped using tapes. The membrane shall be protected by a layer of Geotextile 250gsm and a layer of cement sand screed of minimum 40mm thickness against reinforcement and site traffic.
Vertical Substrate Application (Adhesive based)
Mark out datum lines with chalk to align them with membranes. Lay the membrane from the top side of the retaining wall and fold back to half its length. Apply a uniform thin coat of SmartCare Synthetic Adhesive using bursh or rubber spreader as well as back side of the membrane. Wait till the solvent evaporates and adhesive becomes surface dry (tacky).
Stick the membrane on the surface using roller or rubber spreader making sure that there are no wrinkles. Adhsesive should not be applied on the overlap area. Use masking tape to demarcate overlapped (splicing area).
Once the membrane has adhered to the concrete substrate, alternatively apply 2 coats of SmarCare Rubber Adhesive on the underlaying membrane to achieve a 50mm overlap between adjacent membranes for side and end laps.
